2007 RECIPIENT
 Sharada K.C. Medicine |
Sharada has become an integral part of taking care of the younger children that live with her at AmaGhar, a home for underprivileged children in Nepal. Sharada is one of those people you meet rarely in life, everything about her shines. Her beauty is internal and external. Her mind is sharp, but positively framed. Everyone who knows her loves and respects her, and if you just met her for an instant, she would make an impression on you that would last. Anything she tackles, she becomes completely and incredibly devoted to its mastery. She loves sports, namely basketball, soccer, volleyball, and table tennis. Artistically, she enjoys photography and is very good at drawing. She is a great teacher and spends a lot of time with her younger brothers and sisters. Ama Ghar will not be the same place when she is gone! You will rarely see her dance, but you must know that she loves to do it and has great fun choreographing dances for the younger girls of the orphanage. Yes, there is a
director in her too! Intellectually, she is very curious and would take Socrates to task on his method. She reads when she has time and likes mostly G-rated movies with no kissing, no revealing fashion, etc. At heart, she is a very conservative girl with a dynamic mind. She loves her "jungle home" in Pyuthan and yearns to be back living closer to nature. She doesn't like the city and the ways of "Kathmandu" people. Sharada sets her goals high and meets them. She is always optimistic about the future. She is one amazing young woman! It is her wish to become a medical doctor. The scholarship she has been awarded will help her attain a medical education at a university in Nepal.
UPDATE (19 December 2007): Sharada's scholarship is currently on hold pending acceptance to medical school. Both Sharada and the BMK Foundation were under the impression that she had gained acceptance to the public medical school in Banepa, Nepal. However, after receiving an acceptance letter and having an interview, she was later informed she would not be admitted this year. We are all disappointed by this news, but have great confidence that Sharada will be accepted the following year. In the mean time, we are accepting applications for our 2008 scholarship. Thanks for your support.
UPDATE (11 February 2008): We are thrilled to learn that Sharada has finally been accepted to medical school. She will begin the formal medical program, known as MBBS, at Kathmandu University in Nepalgunj this week. Located in the Tarai of Nepal, this city is hot, humid and tropical. Sharada comes from the mountainous region of Pyuthan, and has been living outside of Kathmandu for over six years. It will be quite a change of scenery and climate, not to mention the dramatic shift of becoming a medical student and no longer residing with 40 other children and young adults! In her absence at AmaGhar, she is serving as a wonderful example of persevering and following your dreams. Our award does not cover her full medical program; however, we have been fortunate enough to find a donor who is paying much of the cost through us. Another donor will match the missing funds.
UPDATE (6 September 2009): Sharada is now on her second year of medical school and doing very well.
